ABOUT

I’m interested in the layers between what appears immediately and what reveals itself over time.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My paintings move between representation and abstraction, from portraits and recognizable forms to work that is entirely nonobjective. Some begin with photographic or observed source material; others develop through a more intuitive process. I build them gradually through layers of color, translucent passages, gestural marks, fluid line, pattern, and texture.

Experimentation is central to my practice. I am interested in what happens when materials, techniques, and visual languages are pushed beyond their expected roles. I move between genres rather than treating portraiture, representation, and abstraction as separate territories, borrowing from each and allowing one approach to alter another. The process often involves testing unfamiliar combinations, disrupting established methods, and following discoveries that happen through the act of painting.

When I work representationally, I want the painted surface to remain present rather than allowing the image to become purely descriptive. In the abstract work, line, movement, repetition, density, and shifts in color become the structure of the painting itself.

I work back and forth between intention and discovery, adding, obscuring, responding, and revising as each layer changes what came before it. I am less interested in arriving at a predetermined image than in allowing experimentation to take the painting somewhere I could not have fully anticipated.

Practice

The possibilities of painting are more interesting to me than the boundaries between its genres.

ARTIST BIO

Melissa Thrasher is a Los Angeles-based contemporary painter working across portraiture, representational painting, and abstraction. Her work explores perception, identity, transformation, and the relationship between what is visible and what exists beyond immediate perception.

Moving between the human figure, recognizable imagery, and fully abstract compositions, Thrasher approaches painting as a way of giving form to experiences that are not always easily seen or articulated. While the visual language changes across her practice, an interest in the tension between surface and inner experience connects the work.

Thrasher came to painting following a career in television and advertising, bringing with her a longstanding engagement with image, narrative, and visual communication. Her work has been exhibited in Southern California and is held in private collections. She lives and works in Santa Monica, California.
